NaNoWriMo

Here is the official press release.

Have a young adult novel—or a YA novel idea—tucked away for a rainy day? Are you putting off pitching your idea simply because you’re not sure how to pitch an agent? No problem! All you have to do is submit the first 250 words of your novel and you can win both exposure to editors, and a one-on-one chat with one of New York’s TOP literary agents Regina Brooks.

Regina Brooks is the founder of Serendipity Literary Agency and the author of Writing Great Books for Young Adults. Brooks has been instrumental at establishing and building the careers of many YA writers, including three-time National Book Award Honoree and Michael Printz Honoree Marilyn Nelson, as well as Sundee Frazier—a Coretta Scott King Award winner, an Oprah Book Pick and an Al Roker book club selection. As an agent, she is known for her ability to turn raw talent into successful authors.

ADDITIONALLY: The top 20 submissions will all be read by a panel of five judges comprised of top YA editors at Random House, HarperCollins, Harlequin, Sourcebooks and Penguin. All 20 will receive free autographed copies of Writing Great Books for Young Adults by Regina Brooks. Of the 20, they will pick the top five submissions and provide each author with commentary. ONE Grand Prize Winner will win a free 10-week writing course courtesy of the Gotham Writer’s Workshop.

Please submit all entries via the contest website at http://www.writingclasses.com/ContestPages/YAPitch.php. One entry per person; anyone age 13+ can apply. Open to the U.S. & Canada (void where prohibited). Entries for the YA Novel Discovery Contest will be accepted from 12:01am (ET) November 1 until 11:59pm (ET),

NOVEMBER IS NaNoWriMo
In honor of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.org)—an international event where aspiring novelists are encouraged to write an entire novel in 30 days—this contest is meant to encourage the aspiring YA author to get started on that novel by offering an incentive for completing the first 250 words.

So apply now! http://bit.ly/1PYGaN

JUDGING
YA literary agent Regina Brooks, along with editors at Sourcebooks, will read all of the entries and determine the top 20 submissions. These submissions will then be read by Dan Ehrenhaft, head Acquisitions Editor at Soucebooks Fire; Alisha Niehaus, Editor at Dial Books for Young Readers (Penguin); David Linker, Executive Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books; Michele Burke, Editor at Knopf Books for Young Readers (Random House); and Evette Porter, Editor at Harlequin. These judges will whittle the top 20 down to four winners and a grand prize winner—all five will be provided commentary on their submissions.

Isn't it exciting? :)

Bran Hambric Hits Indie Bestseller List!

This is what Kaleb posted on his site today!

September 17th, 2009 at 3:10 pm by --KALEB NATION--

I just got word from my publishers that Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse debuted on the Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers bestseller list! The indie list is one of the largest in the country, and includes stores like Book People, Changing Hands, King’s English and lots more all across the country.

This amazing bestseller debut is almost entirely due to word-of-mouth and online bloggers — and all the amazing BranFans who keep posting videos, mentioning the book on Twitter and telling their friends! It’s the first week out, and this is just the beginning!
I want to give a huge thanks to all the wonderful bloggers and people who have helped spread the word. If we keep it up we can make it a national bestseller!

Isn't it great news?! :)

My Review of Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse

* I don’t like to give anything about the book away, so I will talk about the book as a whole. *

Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse is a riveting and suspenseful tale full of magic, mystery, and gnomes. It was brilliantly written and I loved the sly sense of humor. The twists and turns kept me wondering what was waiting around the corner. I fell in love with all of the characters immediately and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to read what happened next. I didn’t want the book to end. The attention to detail was beautiful. It felt like I was there with the characters. I could feel what they were feeling, and see what they were seeing. Bran Hambric left me awestruck and wondering what could possibly come next when I finished reading. I cannot wait to read the second installment in this fantastic series. Words can hardly describe how great it is. A perfect read.

Kaleb Nation Interview

> What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

I think my favorite part about being a writer is the fact that I can create worlds and characters, and people all over the planet can actually go into a bookstore and discover them. The world of Bran Hambric has been almost exclusively my own for six years now, and suddenly lots of people know about it!

> Do you have any writing routines - i.e. listening to a particular CD or munching on a certain snack while writing?

When I write, I am almost always listening to movie soundtracks. My favorite composers are Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman and David Newman -- and I especially enjoy the Lemony Snicket movie soundtrack. Movie music helps me imagine things!

> How has your life changed since you began writing Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse?

Not long ago, I packed up all of my things and moved to California, which is something I've dreamed of for many, many years. On the way, I suddenly realized that I was literally moving to another state to become a full time writer! It was something that I hadn't really processed before. So writing has certainly helped me accomplish many dreams other than being published!

> If you could go back in time to when you first began writing Bran Hambric, what would you tell yourself?

Don't worry Kaleb: all this hard work will be worth it a few years from now!

> What do you like to do in your spare time when you're not writing, blogging, and etcetera?

I really like to make videos for Youtube! When I'm not doing that, I go to movies with friends or just drive around this new city. I also love to do some amateur photography when I have free time.

> How does the fandom affect your everyday life?

I'm not exactly sure how much it affects my daily life, besides answering emails and meeting people and keeping up with fan websites like yours! I try to interact with people who enjoy my writing as muchas I can -- one of the big reasons I got a Twitter!

> If you weren't a writer, what would you be and why?

I think if I wasn't a writer, I think I would be a radio show host. Ireally enjoyed doing that, and it would be great to have a call-in show!

Kaleb is in Chicago!

Brandon Dorman Will Illustrate The Farfield Curse
March 3rd, 2009 by --KALEB NATION--
Brandon Dorman, the award winning illustrator of SAVVY and FABLEHAVEN, has signed on to illustrate the upcoming novel BRAN HAMBRIC: THE FARFIELD CURSE, by Kaleb Nation. Dorman’s cover art for SAVVY by Ingrid Law was chosen as the ” “favorite book jacket of 2008″ by Publisher’s Weekly. His previous works also include covers for the FARWORLD and GOOSEBUMPS series.
THE FARFIELD CURSE is the first in a new series of books by Kaleb Nation. In THE FARFIELD CURSE, a boy named Bran Hambric discovers he is at the center of a plot that started years before he was even born: the plot of a deadly curse his mother created that her former masters are now hunting for him to complete. The novel is set to release in stores Fall of 2009 from Sourcebook Jabberwocky.
Kaleb Nation began writing THE FARFIELD CURSE when he was fourteen years old. Now 20, he attends college in Texas and blogs regularly at www.KalebNation.com. THE FARFIELD CURSE is his debut novel.
More info on the illustrator can be found at www.BrandonDorman.com. More info on Bran Hambric can be found at www.BranHambric.com
————————————————————————————————————–
I can’t even begin to say how long I’ve waited to announce this!
Here is how it happened. A month or two ago, I emailed my editor the names of two illustrators I really liked, hoping that he would take a look and consider them doing the cover. He wrote back saying they were already far ahead of me, and were in talks with my top pick for the illustrator before he even got my message! So in the end, and through wonderful fate, my publishers signed on my dream illustrator without even knowing.

His artwork is stunningly colorful, and I’m certain he will do a wonderful job for The Farfield Curse! This also means that Brandon will most likely do the entire series: just like Brett Helquist did all the Lemony Snicket books, and Mary GrandPre did all the Harry Potter’s, it looks as if Brandon will be the illustrator for Bran Hambric!
He has already finished the early draft sketches of the cover art, one of which will turn into the final cover for the book. I doubt it will be any longer than 3 months (and perhaps, drastically shorter) before the cover is finally ready! - from Kaleb's blog at http://www.kalebnation.com

~Have a great weekend! :D
